Ghosts are vengeful spirits, able to possess matter, such as people, animals, and objects - they are common enemies in the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt franchise. Ghosts have been the servants of demons for hundreds of years.
Description
According to Corset, ghosts used to be stronger in the past, and still retained their memories of the original chaos, making them rough and radical. However, ghosts became weaker with each passing year, and now are easily defeated with the appropriate type of weapon.
Not much else is known about the history of ghosts, aside from the fact that Heaven and Hell have been locked in a million-year war up until recently, which has been turned into a proxy war for both demons and angels to exterminate ghosts instead.[1]
Panty and Stocking were kicked out of Heaven and sent to Daten City in order to keep ghosts under control, since Daten City is infested with evil and darkness. While Scanty and Kneesocks were banned from re-entering Hell after the events of "Bitch Girls: 2 Bitch" until they clean up all the ghosts that escaped through Hell's Gate.
Despite being ordered to eliminate all ghosts without question, there are rare cases wherein ghosts don't mean any malice (usually dying from sad deaths that merely leave them depressed rather than motivated to seek vengeance) - such as Vibe, Cicada Ghost, or Husband Petter, and, at most, would just be something of a minor inconvenience, such as Patrick Fagry as well as the Duelist Ghost.
Biology
Natural ghosts' features and goals are usually an ironic reflection of either their deaths or their failings in life: Hell Pound, for example, was a woman who failed at diets, therefore after she died, she transformed into an obese ghost, who lactated a fattening compound with the goal of using it to fatten up women across the globe.
The No-Brain Ghost.
Ghosts are usually colored black with red and yellow accents, reminiscent to dark magma. Each ghost has unique powers and abilities that are related to their cause of death. They also have the ability to transform into various forms (often hiding their true nature) and are impervious to normal weaponry.
As demonstrated by Vibe in her debut episode, "Pet Cematary Hills", ghosts that are born as infant creatures are still capable of "growing" into adults. Panty was able to take proper care of Vibe as a kitten that she was able to grow into an adult ghost cat before ascending into Heaven.
Reproduction
Most ghosts are born from a particularly sad death, from grudges, or unfinished business. While artificial ghosts can also be created in factories, using a Ghoststone. However, ghosts created in factories are weaker than naturally born ghosts and are not worth any Heaven Coins.
In "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits", the Daemon Sisters use bottles of Ghost Soup to create ghosts based on the grudges of sea animals by throwing said concoction into the sea.
As demonstrated in "Mutant Garterbelts" by Garterbelt when he was fused with the Turtle Ghost, he was able to lay eggs containing ghost turtle-human hybrids, and by the end of the episode, an egg containing a ghost platypus-human hybrid.
Mortality
Ghosts can only be defeated by either angelic or demonic weapons, though normal human weapons can also hurt them, but is moreso just to stall rather than inflicting any serious damage. Though, it should be noted that the only ghosts so far that were able to be defeated by human weapons alone were the zombie ghosts.
When a ghost is about to die, the show switches to a live action shot of a large clay figurine of the ghost exploding. After dying, ghosts leave either Heaven Coins or Hell Coins behind depends on who killed the ghost.
The number of coins they turn into depends on the ghost's strength. But, not all ghosts that die to leave coins, some will rest and ascend to Heaven peacefully, if appeased.
In "Raiders of the Nasal Dark", it is shown that ghosts can also have allergies, as Ugly Snot was allergic to Panty's boogers, specifically.
In "1 Angry Ghost", it is revealed that ghosts can harm other ghosts to the point of also killing them, as Wife Petter was able to give Husband Petter a strong enough bite that caused his demise.
Abilities
Ghosts, like their counterparts from the general media, have the ability to possess their victims. The ghosts from PaSwG are also able to fuse with their victims, such as when Stocking turns into an angel-ghost mutant named Super-sized Bitch, in which she has the physiology and abilities of both an angel and a ghost, another example being Garterbelt when he fuses with the Turtle Ghost, and when Brief fuses with Impostep.
Since ghosts take form of their past lives' regrets, unfinished business, or cause of death, they also take on their respective abilities, for example, the Sushi Chef Ghost has his skills as a sushi chef from when he was alive, or Ugly Snot having the ability to manipulate boogers because he slipped on a booger and died when he was alive.
In "Panty and Stocking: Homecoming", it is revealed that demons are able to psychologically manipulate others, or, at least, angels, into becoming part-ghosts - as shown by Corset who temporarily turned Stocking into an angel-ghost mutant.
In "Raiders of the Nasal Dark", "The Brothers from Heaven", and "Daten City President", ghosts are also able to disguise themselves as humans, and the only ways to distinguish them is to either see if they are susceptible to the attacks of angelic or demonic weapons, or with the help of specific technology such as Polyester's Ghost Vision Max Pro implanted in his right eye or ghost-viewing visors supplemented by Gunsmith Bitch.
In "Six Hundred Sixty Six Candles", it is revealed that ghosts don't necessarily need to fuse with angels in order to gain their abilities, as the Hierarchy Ghost was able to gain angelic regeneration when it swallowed the Poly Brothers. Additionally, the Poly Brothers were left unharmed after said ghost was defeated.
